I’ve been Director of Kindred since March 2009.

I have two children, Adam born in 1995 and Miriam born in 2005. Adam has a rare genetic condition as a result of which he has a cleft palate, learning disability and autism. He is now in adult services and attends a wonderful project called Upward Mobility and also enjoys a part-time place at Edinburgh College. Adam is supported by a number of carers through Self Directed Support.

I started my career as a researcher at the University of Bristol where I also taught sociology to medical students. When I moved back to Edinburgh in 1993, I taught for the University of Edinburgh and the Open University before taking up a post at Children in Scotland. I was involved in the setting up of Enquire and helped to draft the first version of ‘A Parent’s Guide to Additional Support for Learning’. I was Policy and Campaigns Manager for MS Society Scotland for four years. In a voluntary capacity, I have been Chair of Shakti Women’s Aid and a trustee of Enable Scotland.

Kindred is a rewarding place to work as we are constantly learning and adapting to the needs of parents. As a parent myself, I feel very fortunate to work in an environment which is understanding to carers. We have a wonderful, diverse staff team and every person brings their own special talents and abilities. As Director, I think my key role is to develop our organisation to be a supportive environment for our staff, so that we are best placed to support the families who use our service.
